Last week, RadiantFleet engineering team travelled to Berlin for Scala Days 2026, held on 12β13 October at the Kulturbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg. It was the 17th edition of the conference, and our second Scala Days in a row after Lausanne in 2025.
The RadiantFleet platform is built with Scala and Scala.js. The same language powers both our backend and the browser interface that ship managers, crewing agents and seafarers use every day. Scala Days is where the people who create the language and its tools meet the companies that rely on it, which makes it one of the most useful weeks of the year for our team.
The programme brought together the people behind the language and the companies using it in production. Martin Odersky, the creator of Scala, spoke at the conference. Our team first met him at Scala Days in Lausanne last year, so it was great to hear his view of where the language is heading.

Szymon Rodziewicz presented "The state of Scala in 2026", covering Scala 3.9, the first fully Scala 3 compiler without the old Scala 2 mechanisms. The line-up also included Nada Amin from Harvard University, Adam Warski, Tomasz Godzik and Εukasz BiaΕy from VirtusLab, the company that maintains much of Scala's core tooling, and Maciej Gorywoda from JetBrains. We were particularly interested in industry talks such as that of Jan-Pieter van den Heuvel from DHL eCommerce Benelux, a reminder that Scala powers real logistics systems, not just research projects.
One of the strongest threads in this year's programme was using Scala in AI and LLM-based systems. It is a topic we are following closely, as we look for ways to help ship managers and crewing teams spend less time on routine administration.
Our clients never see our code, but they feel its effects: a platform that stays fast and reliable, and that we can adapt quickly when a client needs a new payroll rule or crew workflow. Scala's strong type system helps us catch errors before they reach production, and staying close to the Scala community helps us keep improving the platform.
Thank you to the Scala Center and Plain Schwarz for organising a great event. We are already looking forward to the next edition.
